
One of the most unforgettable stops on my Viking River cruise through Egypt was standing before Queen Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari. From a distance, it looks like it’s grown straight out of the cliffs—three vast terraces stacked high, with ramps and shadowed colonnades that pull you closer step by step. It feels less like a ruin and more like a stage where the queen herself could walk out at any moment.
Here’s the twist: Hatshepsut wasn’t actually buried there.
