Your tween’s face is glowing… and not in a good way. It’s the screen. Again.
Enter the 1,000 Hours Outside Challenge!
Started by Ginny Yurich, a mom of five who was tired of seeing kids glued to devices, this movement dares families to spend 1,000 hours a year outdoors—the same amount of time most kids spend staring at screens.
Sound impossible? It’s not. Here’s how to start:
🌳 Start small – Don’t say “1,000 hours” out loud. Your tween will bolt. Try 1 hour today. Then two tomorrow.
🌸 Keep it sneaky – Scavenger hunts, backyard camping, even cloud-gazing. Make it fun so they forget it’s “wholesome.”
🏞 Adventure anywhere – A hike is great, but so is a sidewalk chalk masterpiece or chasing fireflies in your yard.
📖 Add some magic – What if that butterfly isn’t just a butterfly? My book A Streak of Light is packed with secrets and signs kids can look for in the real world.
