The quieter island is becoming the smarter island. Travellers are increasingly looking beyond packed Mediterranean favourites toward smaller islands, secondary towns and less-developed coastlines. In Greece, islands such as Iraklia and Schinoussa offer a calmer alternative to Santorini and Mykonos.
Food
Matcha has officially gone mainstream. Once a specialist café order, matcha is becoming an everyday drink. In Australia, orders have reportedly jumped 133% year-on-year, and demand has become strong enough to put pressure on supplies from Japan.
Wellness
Analogue wellness is having a moment. Journaling, scrapbooking, film photography, birding and other screen-free pursuits are increasingly being treated as genuine ways to reclaim attention. Around 51% of Gen Z say having a hobby contributes to their joy.
Nature
Scientists have encouraging news about damaged rainforests. Research into recovering tropical forest found that abundance and diversity can regain more than 90% of old-growth levels within 30 years, although complete ecological recovery takes considerably longer.
Culture
African storytelling is entering the digital dome. Johannesburg’s Wits Digital Dome Festival recently transformed traditional African storytelling through VR, animation and immersive projection, bringing old narratives into a distinctly futuristic space.
One Good Thing
$200 million is being committed to species on the brink. The new Phoenix Species Project plans to help recover 100 critically endangered or extinct-in-the-wild species, supporting locally led conservation work around the world.
Lifestyle
The home café is becoming a hobby of its own. People are turning coffee-making into a creative ritual, experimenting with syrups, speciality drinks, vintage coffee corners and elaborate little café setups at home.
Sky & Space
Sunday night’s Moon will still look almost full. On 30 August, the Moon will be around 96.4% illuminated and should rise in Cape Town at approximately 8:57pm. By Monday night, it will have dropped to about 91% illumination.
Curious Fact
You could fit all the planets between Earth and the Moon. The average Earth-Moon distance is about 384,400 km, enough room to line up the seven other planets between them, with a little mathematical wiggle room depending on which planetary diameters you use. Roughly 30 Earth-sized planets could fit across the same distance. 🌙
