My favourite poem from the renowned author, poet and activist:
Phenomenal Woman
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a womanPhenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Nelson Mandela Square

Tamika Doubell

Hello from Gauteng! I’m currently up in Johannesburg after a crazy four days in Durban at the Travel Indaba for Skybok. This weekend my brother and I went for an ice cream at the famous Nelson Mandela Square in the Sandton City Mall. The name ‘Sandton’ is derived from a combination of Sandown and Bryanston. In less than 30 years, Sandton has become the most significant business and financial district in South Africa. It’s home to approximately 300 000 residents and 10 000 businesses including investment banks, top businesses, financial consultants, the Johannesburg stock exchange and one of the biggest convention centres on the African continent, the Sandton Convention Centre. I loved the Nelson Mandela statue in the centre of the square.

An Afternoon at Francois Pienaar’s MAD Charity Pre-Argus Fundraiser

I recently attended the Klein Constantia / Omega Pharma Quick-Step charity cocktail do in aid of Francois Pienaar’s MAD Charity (Make a Difference). Held at the gorgeous Klein Constantia wine farm, there was a fantastic turn-out despite the weather and everyone seemed ready to have a good time. There was an auction which saw some exciting items being swept up by enthusiastic bidders. From a 5 star break-away for two donated by the Royal Portfolio to a brand new top-of-the-range bike donated by Specialized Bikes, guests were keenly getting involved for a good cause. It also helped that pro-cycling legend Eddy Merckx was there!

Here We Go: The Hydro in Stellenbosch

A few weekends ago I found myself at the Hydro in Stellenbosch for a weekend getaway treat. The Hydro offers all kinds of spa packages and its set amidst the beautiful winelands of the Stellenbosch wine region (40 minutes drive from Cape Town). Walking through the vineyards in between treatments, I was stunned by the truly picturesque sights I was seeing. Below are a few photos I took while walking around the estate. I did a course at Vega offered by Canon in the basics of photography, so I had a great time putting what I learnt to use!

Safari in Addo

Africa is all about Safaris. If you’re travelling to South Africa, we have so many great places dotted throughout the country for you to enjoy. Nearby Port Elizabeth in Nelson Mandela Bay on the east coast of the country is the famous Addo Elephant Park, where I did a gorgeous sunset safari for New Year once. It’s one of South Africa’s 19 national parks. Even though I’m practically a local, I’ve never been! We had a really good time and saw many animals, including an unusual spotting of a jackal eating a zebra! You should definitely go, too. Part of the exotic beauty of our country is our wildlife.

A Night of Fun at the G-Star RAW & FHM Parties

I went to a couple of fun functions this past week. Two of them were on the same evening; the G-Star RAW launch & the FHM 2014 Calendar launch. G-Star RAW is a Dutch designer clothing company that, founded in 1955 by Oliver Lewis, produces urban clothing. Models for the brand include Liv Tyler, Girls’ Generation &World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen. Both events were great. See FHM South Africa’s Facebook page here. See G-Star RAW’s Facebook page here & and their online shop here. FHM saw a trendy crowd of young models & photographers enjoying the sunset & view of Table Mountain from the outside deck of The Office in Buitengracht street. At the G-Star RAW party I found the exhibition by Daniel Popper entitled “Robots” alongside exclusive denim art objects from G-Star’s Atelier in Amsterdam particularly intriguing. The night was complemented with a combination of live musical performances by AKA featuring DA L.E.S, Nakhane Toure and DJs Binary & Wildbeats. The event was hosted by Vivid Luxury which did a great job in creating what has been dubbed “the party of the summer”. Thank you to both of these hosts for a great evening. See the official G-Star RAW party album here.

G-Star RAW is known for innovating denim and exploring the endless possibilities of this product.

A Super ERKE Sportswear Launch

On Thursday evening I attended the launch of the new South African flagship store of sports brand “ERKE”. See their Facebook page here and their Twitter here. It opened to the public as of 12 Dec at 9 am on the ground floor of Cape Town’s trendy Garden Centre. I had a really good time, despite being a hot mess thanks to Cape Town’s infamous summer heat! Thank goodness for Cruz Vodka & Scheckter’s OrganicEnergy Drink cocktails which cooled me down a great deal! Along with Peroni South Africa, S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna waters & bubbly by Steenberg, everyone had reason to get loose with their festive spirits – and with their wallets, too! Liezel van Der Westhuizen gave a stunning welcome explaining a bit about the brand. Together with Marina Nestel, they made a cute pair dressed in ERKE sportswear! Thanks to The Little Black Book PR & Events for the wonderful evening. See the official album from the event here.

Mandela’s Legacy For Me

Tamika Doubell South Africa

Anyone who knows me knows I’m proudly South African. Mandela’s passing had a huge effect on me as this country said goodbye to its most cherished soul. I was living in Cape Town at the time & all around me there were Madiba posters & South African flags waving in the streets. One day there was a huge concert to pay tribute to him at the Cape Town Stadium. Madiba has taught me so many lessons. When I think about it, he was the first one who taught me to get involved in my community where I could & work with others to strive for the better.

Stefania Morland 8th Birthday & Online Store Launch

Recently I attended the 8th birthday bash & launch of Stefania Morland’s online store in Cape Town, South Africa. The swanky affair took place in Kloof Street & welcomed a chic, cosmopolitan crowd. I had a super time looking through all her designs and found this gold number (photo below) to be particularly appealing! If you live in Cape Town, do your shopping in person at her design studio & retail store front – 153A Kloof Street, Gardens. If you’re shopping online, find her stuff at the new online shop here. You can also join her & her team on Twitter or Facebook . Thanks to all who were involved in this evening, I had a great time!
