- Eat enough animal fat. This is central to Banting. Animal fat DOES NOT make you fat, and you need to eat it. Small amounts at a time make you feel full and stop you from overeating.
- Eat enough vegetables. Vegetables should be your bulk-food and this means that you must try to have veggies with every meal. Green vegetables are the best – low in carbs and full of nutrients. There are a great many different vegetables on the Green list. Make sure that you have variety in your diet.
- Don’t snack. For the first week or so of Banting, that is, when you are going carb-cold-turkey, you may need to snack periodically, if only to keep your sanity. Make sure that you have Banting-friendly snacks at hand. Remember it is essential to have a good breakfast to set you up for the day. If you aren’t losing the hunger pangs, increase the animal fat in your diet.
- Don’t lie to yourself. Eating carbs that are perceived to be proteins, like legumes, baked beans, peanuts and quinoa, will undermine your Banting attempts. Pay attention to the Red list – the forbidden foods. Quite simply, a red-listed item is either toxic or will cause weight gain.

I went to a gorgeous bar in Cape Town this weekend. They were doing a happy hour with some seriously good cocktails. As a Banter, it’s pretty hard to say yes to a cocktail you know is full of sugar and carbs. You don’t want to break your eating plan but let’s get real, you do want to have a good time. I did some research and below are the carb counts in different cocktails (and other drinks) for those of you out there who are Banting. I did a previous post on which drinks have no carbs at all here. If you’ve never heard of “Banting” before, you may want to check out this awesome post.

Hard alcohol contains no sugar or carbs. Even though it’s made from natural sugars, fruits, grains, sugarcane and berries, those sugars are converted to alcohol during the fermentation and distillation process. Stick with straight alcohol, though. Cocktails and mixed drinks will be full of sugary sodas and fruit juices. Hard alcohol does, however, contain calories, so anyone on a weight loss plan needs to be careful when it comes to alcohol intake.
Vodka is generally made from a grain base, such as rye, wheat or potatoes, and typically has an alcohol content from 35 to 50 percent by volume. Make sure to buy only straight vodka; flavored vodkas will often have sugar added.
Rum is free from added sugar or carbs, is typically made from sugarcane or molasses, and comes in a variety of styles: white rum, amber rum, dark rum, spiced rum and aged rum. Typically, the darker the rum, the older it is. Rums can spend years aging in oak casks. Flavored rums can have sugar added, so make sure to stay away from them. The average rum has an alcohol content of 35 percent by volume.
Gin is made from a grain base and flavored with juniper berries, and has a typical alcohol content of 35 percent by volume. It’s also usually made with citrus botanicals such as lemon, orange, grapefruit or lime peel. Straight gin has no sugar or carbs, but the mixers in popular drinks, such as a gin and tonic, do. Also make sure to avoid sloe gin, which has sugar added.
Whiskey is made from a fermented grain mash, usually of barley, rye, wheat or corn. Depending on where it’s made or what it’s made from, whiskey can be found under different names. None have carbs or sugar added. Most whiskey has an alcohol content of about 40 percent by volume.
The Banting Diet has taken South Africa by storm. It means eating low carbs and high fat (LCHF). Whenever you eat, choose more fatty stuff to fill you up and little or no carbs at all. You’re allowed between 25 to 50g/100g carbs a day, so you can have some carbs (list of foods in this bracket below). There are no portion sizes to stick to. You pretty much eat as much as you want until you’re full. The idea is that your body knows when it’s full and it will tell you. You don’t have to overeat, and by no means should you undereat. Below are foods you can eat and can’t eat. I also give the Cape Townians places which serve Banting dishes.
