Fashion Week Brooklyn selected 2 designers last year to show on the runway in New York for their annual fashion show. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University graduate Laduma Ngxokolo was one of the designers chosen to show his collection Buyel’mbo from his range “MaXhosa by Laduma”.
Denim Day grew from a 1999 court ruling in which the Italian High Court overturned a rape conviction, arguing that because the victim was wearing tight jeans at the time of the assault she must have been conferring consent. The ruling provoked outrage + wearing denim on the anniversary became an international expression of protest against misguided attitudes about sexual violence.
My shoot in New York for Fashion Week Brooklyn was pretty awesome. We shot in Soho, Manhattan + in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Denim Day Campaign is in support of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. On 29 April 2015, models, makeup artists, hairstylists, bloggers + fashionistas will walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall styled in denim for the cause! City Hall will host the official commencement speech. Brooklyn Fashion Week will be held on 25-28 June this year, with one lucky designer showcasing his or her collection on the runway!
Here is an image from a bridal shoot I did in Stellenbosch, South Africa! Read more about the shoot here + check out more on the photographer + jewellery designer. Are you a budding model? I’ve written about some do’s + dont’s for getting started. I loved this hairstyle so much that I used it in my new headshots!
I had a great meeting with Rick Davy + Michael Johnson of Fashion Week Brooklyn at Starbucks in New York. I am their South African ambassador. You can read about the programs they offer young designers in South Africa to show their collections in New York here as well as about their events in New York + Johannesburg.
