Phantom of the Opera
Taking my seat for Phantom of the Opera

I went to see The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway a few years ago—it was an unforgettable evening.

  • Phantom opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York on January 26, 1988, and ran for an astonishing 35 years until April 16, 2023—totaling 13,981 performances, making it the longest-running musical in Broadway history.
  • The show dazzled award season in 1988, winning seven Tony Awards—including Best Musical, Best Actor for Michael Crawford, Best Direction by Harold Prince, plus top design honors for set, costume, and lighting.
  • Its Broadway production also swept up seven Drama Desk Awards that same year—with honors for acting, music, direction, set, costuming, lighting, and orchestrations.
  • The Majestic Theatre itself was transformed for Phantom, including building support for the iconic crashing chandelier and a stage pit for elaborate scenery—enhancements that helped deliver its spectacular production.
  • Financially, Phantom remains one of Broadway’s highest-grossing musicals—having earned over $1.36 billion from its original Broadway run.
  • A fun tidbit: its original Broadway cast featured Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine—she was Andrew Lloyd Webber’s wife at the time and originated the role, which helped ignite the show’s Broadway success.

If any of my readers are plotting a trip to Broadway—please let me know and I will gladly give you suggestions!
