MY REVIEW
Words are everywhere—but how often do we stop to think about how they feel? Words by Katherine Davis-Gibbon is a beautifully understated picture book that gently explores the emotional weight of language in a way that’s simple enough for young children to grasp and meaningful enough to spark conversations with older readers.
Told in lyrical, rhythmic lines, the book moves through the idea that words—like people—can be warm or cold, kind or cruel, loud or quiet. It introduces young readers to the idea that language doesn’t just carry meaning—it carries emotion. This concept is especially valuable in early childhood settings, where social-emotional learning is key. Whether children are just beginning to find their voices or learning how to be more mindful with their words, Words offers a quiet space for reflection.
Davis-Gibbon’s writing is clear, gentle, and intentionally thoughtful—inviting young readers to slow down and sit with big ideas. The repetition and rich metaphor make it ideal for read-aloud moments or classroom discussions about kindness, empathy, and communication.
Words is not flashy or loud—but that’s exactly what makes it powerful. It’s a thoughtful addition to any picture book collection, especially for parents, educators, and counselors looking to nurture emotional awareness in a gentle, accessible way.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly—it gets a big thumbs up from me!

Publisher’s Book Summary: A multicultural group of children discovers a park where everyone’s words come to life, looking and behaving a lot like kids. Some words are kinder and more inviting, while others are pushy or prickly or odd. Not every word makes the best first impression, but as they play and share adventures, the children connect more deeply with language. They learn that words have superpowers and grow to love them for their quirks. They see that words make excellent friends, who magically appear just as they’re needed and perfectly mirror how kids feel. The more these children bond with language, the more they tap into their inner voice— and as they dare to give it expression, they gain more respect for the power of words.
