MY REVIEW

Today’s review is a book called Not the Vet! written by Jill Rosen, the latest adventure from the award-winning Ode to a Pug series.

This one follows Phoebe, a lovable little pug with a big imagination and an even bigger fear —the dreaded visit to the vet. Told in rhyming verse and full of heart, this story takes one of the scariest experiences for kids and turns it into a hilarious, tail-wagging triumph. We follow Phoebe from the moment she senses something suspicious — the car ride, the waiting room, the terrifying door that leads to needles and thermometers — all the way to the brave ending where she realizes the vet isn’t a monster after all. It’s equal parts comedy, chaos, and courage. Young readers will giggle at her anxious antics and cheer when Phoebe finally faces her fear.

One of my favorite moments was a picture showing Phoebe’s wrinkly face in the backseat — it instantly reminded me of my best friend’s pug, who used to give the same “please don’t make me go” look before bath time. The illustrations are soft, expressive, and packed with details that kids will love to spot. This book will inspire young readers to see bravery in small moments and help parents and pet owners laugh about their own vet-day dramas.

It gives us all a reason to feel comforted, to face our fears with humor, and to remember that sometimes the scariest things turn out to be not-so-scary after all. A heart-warming, snort-worthy read for kids — and every grown-up who’s ever loved a pug!
