The Café in the Crypt is one of London’s most unusual places

Over 25,000 people were buried here, and every day people sit down for coffee. Located beneath St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square, it occupies an 18th-century crypt where thousands of Londoners were buried between 1722 and 1853.

The café opened in 2008 after a major restoration

I found it unexpectedly peaceful. The low ceilings and warm lighting create a quiet, sheltered feeling, even in the middle of the city. Fun fact: the crypt is now part of a charity that supports people experiencing homelessness, giving the café a meaningful purpose beyond its history.
