Growing up in South Africa, I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy many safaris—from Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi to Shamwari, Addo + Mountain Zebra Park in South Africa. Something people may not know about me is that I love spotting birds just as much. On a recent trip to Kragga Kamma Game Park, I visited the bird hide and saw a red-knobbed coot. A bird hide is called a ‘hide’ because it allows people to hide from the birds while watching them. In North America, a bird hide is usually called a bird blind.
Fun fact: ‘safari’ comes from the Swahili word for ‘journey.’ For me, that journey always includes birds. 🐦✨
Bird hides aren’t only for birds. Leopards, crocodiles, hippos and elephants sometimes appear beside them too
