Did you know you can kayak through water that glows in the dark in Florida?
Along Florida’s Space Coast, tiny organisms called dinoflagellates create bioluminescence. When the water moves, they produce flashes of blue-green light. That means every paddle stroke can leave a glowing trail behind your kayak. Even fish swimming underneath you can light up the water.
The best time to experience it is generally June through September, when the summer bioluminescence is at its brightest. Going close to a new moon can make the glow easier to see because the sky is darker.
One company offering the experience is BK Adventure near Florida’s Space Coast. You can even choose a clear kayak, so you’re sitting directly above the glowing water. Tours are around 1½ hours, with some locations roughly an hour from Orlando.

And in winter there’s another surprise: glowing comb jellies can appear in the water instead.
