The main city is Funchal, where you’ll find restaurants, markets, gardens and plenty of Madeira’s famous wine. One of the island’s most unusual experiences is taking a ride in a traditional wicker basket toboggan through the streets of Monte. Nature is the real star here. Madeira is famous for its levadas, old water channels that now have walking trails running alongside them. You can hike through forests, mountains and valleys, often with spectacular views along the way. There are also volcanic swimming pools, black-sand beaches and opportunities to see dolphins and whales.
