Halloween season is one of my favorite excuses to travel somewhere with a slightly darker story.
Across America, entire towns lean into their haunted histories during September and October, turning old streets, historic hotels and centuries-old legends into surprisingly fun fall getaways.
Here are five places I’d put on a Halloween travel list:
🎃 Salem, Massachusetts
Probably America’s most famous Halloween destination. Salem’s October celebrations include haunted attractions, walking tours, museums and events connected to the infamous 1692 witch trials.
👻 Savannah, Georgia
Beautiful by day and deliciously creepy after dark. Savannah is known for ghost tours through its historic district, old cemeteries and stories of supposedly haunted buildings.
🕯️ New Orleans, Louisiana
For something moodier, New Orleans has ghost tours, historic cemeteries, vampire legends and plenty of supernatural folklore woven into the city’s history.
🏨 Estes Park, Colorado
This is where you’ll find the Stanley Hotel, famous for inspiring Stephen King’s The Shining. Autumn also happens to be a gorgeous time to explore the surrounding Rocky Mountains.
🧙 Sleepy Hollow, New York
Yes, it really exists! The village celebrates its connection to Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, with seasonal events inspired by the Headless Horseman.
My pick? Sleepy Hollow. I love when a place manages to blur literature, history and travel into one slightly eerie little adventure. 🍂
