Following Mail & Guardian’s recent article “Ten Of The Biggest Voices on South Africa’s Social Media Scene“, I discovered a group of photographers who collectively call themselves “I See A Different You”. They are based in Soweto + photograph their world the way they see it. Soweto stands for “South Western Townships” + is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. I find these guys really inspiring. Follow them on Twitter, Facebook + Instagram. This week I definitely take my inspiration from this group of creative entrepreneurs who seem to be among the loudest shouting online – and have over 16,000 people who are listening.
Recently, Tony award-winning South African actor, director and playwright John Kani spoke at Forum in Port Elizabeth. I was blown away with his passion, peace and positive attitude. You could hear a pin drop in the room while he spoke – addressing some of the city’s most successful businessmen. Here was his message:
+ We need to grasp the magnitude of what we achieved with ending Apartheid and avoiding a civil war in South Africa all those years ago
+ We need to recognize the power of Ubuntu – the African concept of community; “I am because you are”. This deals with the empowerment that comes with unity and working together
Where RAW Episode 1 introduced the world of musician Yuna Zarai in Los Angeles, the new chapter picks up in Cape Town, South Africa and explores its diverse landscape with installation artist Daniel Popper. He’s had huge success creating massive installations at events around the world. Now he’s expanding his talents by designing the interior for a new Cape Town nightclub and building the four story Nelson Mandela Tree of Wisdom.
4 Months ago while I was in Europe, I took a trip to Toledo. It’s a small village south of Madrid in Spain. It’s an official UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its sheer history and beauty. It has a famous history in the production of bladed weapons, which are now popular souvenirs of the city.
This weekend I attended a fabulous fashion event in Brooklyn called Art Meets Fashion, which was an awesome evening held at Industry City, Sunset Park, Brooklyn. AMF is an International exhibit which includes fashion influenced artwork, sculpture and video installations created by 40+ artists from NYC, Brazil, Italy, Africa, Hong Kong and Spain.
