Your New Year’s Resolutions + South Africa’s 3rd Largest City

What’s on your New Year’s Resolution list?

If it’s got anything to do with health or travel – allow me to introduce one way you could tick both boxes in one fell swoop.

Visit Durban, South Africa.

In 2014, CNN rated it as “The coolest city in South Africa you’ve never seen” (See the article here Durban City).

It’s a major center of tourism because of the city’s warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches.

  • Mahatma Ghandi, leader of the Indian independence movement, began his political journey in Durban.
  • Durban city is home to The Ushaka Marine World – the worlds 5th largest aquarium
  • Shaka Zulu, the most famous Zulu king, ruled the lands surrounding Durban. Durban’s international airport was named after him; known as “King Shaka International Airport”. Nearly seven million passengers pass through the airport each year!
  • It hosts a fantastic travel conference each year, which Skybok had the pleasure of filming. Also see photos from my Township Tour in Durban.

With almost 4 million people, you may need some suggestions on where to eat + where to stay.

I wrote about the Banting diet a while back here on The Starlit Path. I thought seeing as it’s a brand new year, I would share it again. (We all have some unwanted Christmas / New Year’s weight to lose.)

As someone who takes health seriously, I’m always looking for healthier ways of eating which aren’t just fad diets. And I need a diet I can apply to any city I’m in.

In my article I listed places you could find Banting friendly restaurants in Cape Town.

This month I’m giving you places to reach for the trendiest health snack in Durban – rated 3rd on South Africa’s list of Top 10 cities to visit!

Whether you’re on vacation in Durban or live there, allow me to showcase the best restaurants offering Banting-friendly meals PLUS the best places to stay while you’re there!

Township Tours in South Africa

When Skybok was up in Durban 2014 filming for the Tourism Indaba, we went on an organized media tour. It was incredible seeing townships one would never get to see. If you travel here, make sure you do an organized tour with a legitimate company. We spent the day touring Durban and surrounding townships where Nelson Mandela began his journey with the ANC. The particular township we went to also happened to be where Ghandi spent his years in South Africa. It’s called the Inanda Heritage Route. We ended off with a gorgeous beachfront party and buffet in true African style! Below is a list of companies who do township tours. It is an unforgettable and heart-warming experience. You won’t be sorry.

I was honoured to receive an award as a finalist at this year’s Business Women’s Association of South Africa’s Regional Business Achiever Awards. Held at The Crystal Towers in Cape Town, I was thrilled to receive this recognition of distinction in business as an entrepreneur in the film industry! Skybok is all about connecting South Africa. I look forward to our exciting future doing so. I am very blessed that I was able to turn something I am passionate about into a profitable venture. It’s exciting to have been named in amidst such successful women across the region in all industries. I am proudly South African and marvel each day at our beautiful country and our people. Thank you, BWA! Getting Interviewed on Top Billing & Filming a Music Video

I recently went to the “Cape Town Good Food & Wine Fest”. I did it because I love food and wine. This was a whole day of walking around discovering new tastes and brands that the Western Cape has to offer. My best was the Vrede en Lust wine stall. I bought their flagship wine for myself – The Boet Erasmus 2009. We shot their video profile for Skybok recently as a result! I made a new friend in The Pillsbury man while we walked around! I also entered a competition to win a car. The wine tasting was way too much fun. I went with my good friend Candice and we had a fabulous time sampling this new champagne vodka that’s out. We also tried shots, cocktails and a new Bubblegum flavoured liqueur by a company called Smooch Beverages.

In other news, I had an interview with the popular local TV show Top Billing. Presenter Janez Vermeiren interviewed me!

I’ll be appearing on the Expresso breakfast show and Top Billing on the 3rd of July, so tune in if you like! 🙂 Recently I shot the new music video for a band called Mac Stanley (previously known as Flat Stanley) and their song ‘Hold On’. It was very cool! I had to be a graceful sleeping beauty and smooch my prince 🙂

I’ve also been pleased with two interviews I did for very popular local blogs – http://shebuiltthiscity.com/2012/06/13/tamikadoubell/ http://amg133.blogspot.com/2012/05/bucket-babe-tamika-doubell.html Check them out! Sometime not too long ago I went to watch Alan Committie’s show called ‘Funny Business’ at Theatre on the Bay. It was honestly one of – if not the best – comedy shows I’ve ever seen in my life. I went with my friend Nella and we didn’t stop laughing all the way through. The man is brilliant I watched him perform again last night as MC at the Vodacom Funny Festival at The Baxter Theatre here in Cape Town.

More Good News for SA Film Industry

Another local film is due to set fire to the hearts of South Africans!

Following the exciting news of local film ‘Skoonheid’ winning at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Zurich film festival this year, as well as being selected for the Oscars 2012, comes another local masterpiece.

‘Florida Road’ is a film about a wealthy Indian family from Mumbai who moves to Durban for a better life.

Follow protagonist Shaan Sahay (Ashmit Patel) as he is desperate for his father’s love and acceptance while struggling to pursue his passion for writing. After a tragedy hits the family, he discovers his true place in the world as well as the importance of family.

Filmed entirely on location in Durban, the film showcases the beauty of the city while telling the story of one family.

It’s an independent feature film, directed by Brad Glass and written and produced by Fred Fontana.

Fred Fontana is from the United States originally, and has been involved in Hollywood motion pictures such as ‘The Specialist’ with Sylvestor Stallone and ‘Solider’ with Kurt Russell, amongst others.

After 20 years in Hollywood, he realized South Africa’s potential for filmmaking and moved to South Africa, where he’s begun ‘Sunworld Productions’. Seems he’s picked up much success after just a year of being established, as ‘Florida Road’ has already won many awards at festivals around the world (you can see all of them on its website http://floridaroadthemovie.com/).

The title was inspired by a well-known road in Durban, Florida Road.

I for one am very excited to see the film, which releases in our cinemas in the next few weeks!
