Travel South Africa: Clarens

Highlight On Clarens

I’m still doing my travel throwbacks blog series, and today’s post is about a charming town in the heart of South Africa that’s causing quite a stir on the culture map, for its chain of new pop-up boutiques, small business and trendy outdoor events.

Clarens is a small town situated in the foothills of The Maluti Mountains in the Free State province of South Africa and nicknamed the “Jewel of the Eastern Free State“. It was established in 1912 and named after the town of Clarens in Switzerland where exiled Paul Kruger spent his last days.

I stayed at this adorable quaint guesthouse while I was there for the weekend.

Things To Do In Clarens

  1. Golden Gate Highlands National Park
  2. Bushmen Art at Schaaplaats Farm

Cape Town in Summer

December is officially the start of summer in Cape Town. I’m super excited because summer here is gorgeous. Tourists are flying in from around the world and the weather is pretty much perfect everyday. That’s why it was so easy to do this clothing shoot on the beach recently. I’m looking forward to a couple awesome things coming up:

1. A full moon drive-in cinema by this legendary film community in Cape Town.

2. A Secret Santa mission i’m involved in with my office staff at the Waterfront Film Studios…. buying someone a gift under R50 ($5) very tricky!

3. A visit to Orinoco Bree Street for a taste of their traditional Venezuelan drink “Cuba Libre” – a mixed drink made of rum, cola and lime.

4. A pretty exciting film festival called the Kunjanimation Film Festival made up of screenings and workshops all over the city.

5. The Little Fighters Cancer Trust is hosting a sunset picnic on Schalk Burger’s Wine Farm, Welbedacht Estate, on 6 Dec to raise funds + support. If you’re in the Cape Town area, tickets are only R200 ($20) and you receive a picnic basket on arrival, free wine tasting and there’s a live performance. Book your place here. I’ve been involved with LFCT for 2 years now. More on that soon.

What are you up to where you are?

We had an impromptu little photo shoot session up in Hout Bay for BaliBali Fashion Store Cape Town….. I created their blog here and their Facebook here. Also their Pinterest here. The photos we are taking on the beach and on location in Hout Bay are all part of their new summer campaign. Marketing posters will be for the Lifestyle Centre in Kloof + digital advertising. I was thinking about 5 questions I would love to know from you (my lovely readers!)……

+ What’s one song that you can’t stop listening to?
+ What’s one thing you’re doing lately to make yourself better?
+ What’s your favourite piece of jewellery atm?
+ What have you been wanting to do but just…haven’t?

My answers:

+ I love EDM music the best. But lately it’s “Yonce/Partition” from Beyonce’s new album “Beyonce”
+ Banting diet. Read here and get involved
+ A ring I bought at Topshop
+ Go for a massage

** Ps. I wrote about the colour symbolism of ORANGE + PURPLE.

Here We Go: The Hydro in Stellenbosch

A few weekends ago I found myself at the Hydro in Stellenbosch for a weekend getaway treat. The Hydro offers all kinds of spa packages and its set amidst the beautiful winelands of the Stellenbosch wine region (40 minutes drive from Cape Town). Walking through the vineyards in between treatments, I was stunned by the truly picturesque sights I was seeing. Below are a few photos I took while walking around the estate. I did a course at Vega offered by Canon in the basics of photography, so I had a great time putting what I learnt to use!

South African In: Munich

Not so long ago I traveled to Bavaria, Germany, with family and friends. We landed in Munich and took a train to Oberammergau; the prettiest village I’ve ever been to. The reason we went was to watch the famous “Passion Play”, which is performed there only every ten years.
