Inspired By: I See A Different You

i see a different you

Following Mail & Guardian’s recent article “Ten Of The Biggest Voices on South Africa’s Social Media Scene“, I discovered a group of photographers who collectively call themselves “I See A Different You”. They are based in Soweto + photograph their world the way they see it. Soweto stands for “South Western Townships” + is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. I find these guys really inspiring. Follow them on Twitter, Facebook + Instagram. This week I definitely take my inspiration from this group of creative entrepreneurs who seem to be among the loudest shouting online – and have over 16,000 people who are listening.

Shooting at Roodebloem Studios

Models South Africa Roodebloem Studios

I shot yesterday at Roodebloem Studios in Woodstock, Cape Town. We had so much fun! The studios are amazing (huge kitchen, lounge, private makeup room, bathroom, beautiful modern finishings) I think they are every photographer’s dream! I have some awesome behind the scenes photos on my instagram @misstamikajade. We did my hair the same as we did for the bridal shoot this past weekend in Stellenbosch. I actually rarely have it curly in real life, it’s more naturally wavy like in this shoot I did for City Lodge. All these photos were taken on my new gold iphone6.

Behind-The-Scenes Bridal ShootsI modelled at Brenaissance wine estate this past weekend for a bridal editorial with photographer Veronique Millswedding gown designer Elizabeth Stockenstrom + Bijoux JewelleryBrenaissance is any bridal couple’s dream venue. The Bridal suite is beautifully decorated. There’s a white glass fronted chapel that overlooks the vineyards. The venue is a blank canvas and it’s got all the amenities needed for an amazing wedding! If you feel like relaxing at the restaurant on a saturday, they’ve launched their new picnic menu. They also have a brand new wine tasting deck. They offer the most delicious wine paring pizza + lovely cheese cake to top it all off. The shoot was so much fun! I’m confident the images will be pretty awesome. Read more on an article I wrote for aspiring models on how to make magic in front of the camera. I’ve also got more photos of behind-the-scenes on my instagram @misstamikajade.

Creative Inspiration

1940’s Pin-Ups with a Dash of Milk

Pin Up Girls Milk Portraits Jaroslav WieczorkiewiczLondon-based photographer Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz is a someone who loves pushing the boundaries and stepping outside his comfort zone. He’s known for his high speed photography and pushing it to the extremes, most of the time involving milk! His newest set with milk combines his love for composites and high speed and it shines with some traditional 1940’s pin-ups.

When looking for inspiration, Jaroslav took a page out of calendars by Gil Elvgren, Alberto Vargas, and Greg Hildebrandt. Each of the photographs is comprised of over 100 images. None of the photographs contain any extra illustration and the most intricate piece contains almost 200 layered images. The images were taken all around the world at seminars and workshops that Jaroslav has held.

Be sure to check out his Twitter + Facebook. Keep up with his upcoming workshops on his blog.

Tamika Doubell

I was honoured to receive an award as a finalist at this year’s Business Women’s Association of South Africa’s Regional Business Achiever Awards. Held at The Crystal Towers in Cape Town, I was thrilled to receive this recognition of distinction in business as an entrepreneur in the film industry! Skybok is all about connecting South Africa. I look forward to our exciting future doing so. I am very blessed that I was able to turn something I am passionate about into a profitable venture. It’s exciting to have been named in amidst such successful women across the region in all industries. I am proudly South African and marvel each day at our beautiful country and our people. Thank you, BWA! BK Style & My Arts For Brooklyn Fashion Week & AMF with Longstreet Fashion Store

I had a wonderful shoot this past week with Patrick Ryan Photography in Cape Town for Brooklyn Fashion Week & My Arts International in their collaboration to strengthen ties between South Africa and New York. This partnership is under the UN Millennium 2015 Program and sees a host of fashion-related events in both cities. I’m very proud to be the South African ambassador for this movement and to be working with them on organising the “Art Meets Fashion Event” in Johannesburg this year (the first of many events the two nations have partnered to do).

The event offers a platform for fashion designers and artists to showcase their work, trade and network. Taking place at Constitution Hill The Star newspaper has taken the title sponsorship of the event in Johannesburg, officially making it “The Star Art Meets Fashion Joburg”. Shooting in Simonstown at the Old Navy Base, we were very pleased for Longstreet Fashion Store to come on board (stores in Cavendish, Tygervalley, V&A Waterfront) and supply the clothing for the shoot. Other events this year include:

Arts Meets Fashion, Johannesburg (Trade, Exhibitions, Arts Development Workshops)| 24 & 25 April 2014, Johannesburg

Arts Meets Fashion, Cape Town (Trade, Exhibitions, Arts Development Workshops) | 1 & 2 May 2014, Cape-Town

SA Lifestyle Expo “Taste of AfriKa” (incorporating Mandela day celebration) | 17 & 18 July 2014, New York

Hollywood Black Film Festival – Afrika (Film workshops, Screening, Talent scouting, Nomination for HBFF awards) | August 2014, South Africa (Venue TBC)

Arts Meets Fashion, New York | September 2014, New York

Fashion Week Brooklyn | October 2014, Brooklyn

VIVA South Africa! Another night out in New York

So again we hit the clubs this weekend (I promise I am actually here doing a course and not just going out :P) ……. We went to Hudson Terrace again because one of my classmates Katie had her boyfriend visiting from Baltimore. Again, thank you Catherine for getting us in free (usually entry to this club is $20) and for MJ Perez for the table and complimentary alcohol. Also a huge thanks to Reflections NYC Photography for the great pictures. This time I took my South African flag with me to spice things up and let me say it was a hit! I was surprised at how many people came up to me and asked about Mandela. I was very impressed. The outfit I wore is entirely from H&M (we don’t have it in SA, what’s up with that?!). I had such a great night out and found myself dancing on a table before long.
