Nightlife in Grahamstown

We have a fantastic nightlife scene all over South Africa. Having lived and studied in New York myself, I am proud to say our clubs are not too dissimliar! Friar Tucks is a big nightclub in a small student town. Grahamstown is about an hour drive from Port Elizabeth. It has around 70 000 people. It’s a university town – with Rhodes University campus taking up centre stage. A classic nightclub in the heart of Grahamstown, South Africa, Friar Tucks has been voted as South Africa’s number 1 nightclub.

Student Life in Grahamstown at The Highlander Bar

Shooting the famous “Highlander” in Grahamstown for Skybok was an absolute delight. Part of our lifestyle is our nightlife. The students in Grahamstown (1 hour from Port Elizabeth on the east coast of South Africa) always have fun. In between their university lectures, they come here for a drink and a meal in the evening. This is actually a hotel with 2 bars – one upstairs and another below the floorboard 😉 We travelled to Grahamstown to film this venue recently for my business, Skybok – which is all about travel and showcasing the beauty of our country through video. On the evening we shot, we were met by a massive 21st party! The whole venue lies adjacent to Saint Andrews College which is a very posh school in this country. I have a feeling this spot is very popular for birthday parties and special occasions celebrated by students. What’s great is that it’s fully licensed and has wheelchair access. It was absolute madness and loads of fun. We took some hilarious pictures – see them HERE.

Our ‘Crew’ for the night!

Crazy Antics at a Typical South African Bar Caught on Camera!

Rhodes University is situated in a little town in South Africa called Grahamstown. It’s a student town filled with some exciting nightlife spots. One of them is “Rat & Parrot”. I don’t think tourists realise just how similar it is here in this country to where they’re from. Cape Town has made its name famous, but don’t underestimate the smaller towns more off-the-beaten path! Grahamstown is one of them. If you’re a student, it’s a great place to look into studying.

Golf Course on the Water’s Edge in East London

East London is a city on the southeast coast of South Africa. The city lies on the Indian Ocean coast, largely between the Buffalo River and the Nahoon River, and hosts the country’s only river port. I was recently there with my film crew to shoot the city’s famous golf club. Tranquil and serene, it has glorious views of the ocean and a bit of wildlife wandering around the course. Watching the video, you get a window into the beautiful land and ocean of this part of the country.

Filming The African Dawn Wildlife & Bird Sanctuary in Jeffrey’s Bay for Skybok

Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa, is a small seaside town just outside of Port Elizabeth in Nelson Mandela Bay. It’s where the Billabong Pro Surf Competition takes place every year. It’s small and I love the friendly people and salty sea breeze. We shot an unusual animal sanctuary there, Africa Dawn Wildlife & Bird Sanctuary. Africa is full of beautiful animals and this sanctuary is a divine tourist stop. The park is home to animals exclusively from our soil. These include Cheetah, Servals, Lynx, Squirrels, Marmosets, Squirrels, Monkeys, Blue, Common Duikers, Bushbok, Grysbok, Meerkats, Wallabies and a Crocodile. They also have over 250 species of birds indigenous to South Africa in the largest Aviary in the Eastern Cape! You can listen to the calls of birds such as the Knysna Loerie, the Laughing Dove and the vibrant Red Bishop. Other birds around the park include the majestic Black Eagle, Blue Cranes, Crowned Cranes, Hornbills, Emu, Lorikeets and Macaws. Check out the video to get a glimpse into what we have to offer here in this pocket of the world.

Recording at Algoa FM

Recently I recorded our radio ad for Doubell Machines & Equipment (my family’s business). We manufacture brick-making machinery. Check out our website here: www.makebricks.co.za You can listen to the advert here, now airing on the Eastern Cape’s Algoa FM: http://soundcloud.com/dane-doubell/doubell-machines-radio-promo. The ad was recorded at the very modern studios of Algoa FM here in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa! I was very impressed with the newly-renovated studios; the whole place has a very chic &  fresh feel.

One thing I can say is that everyone there is very friendly and professional, and working with them for this was easy! I do a lot of radio ads in Cape Town for them but had never actually been in to their studios here in PE at The Boardwalk. Algoa FM is The Biggest Commercial Radio Station from the Garden Route to the Wild Coast on 94 to 97fm. Here is their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/algoafm. Taking a tour, I visited their boardroom. They have these gorgeous framed pictures of famous musicians on their walls and I especially loved these printed sheets of all the Algoa FM presenters under the glass of the boardroom table! Oh – I also thought the red couch was hot. I want one for my flat!

Shooting the video profile of this divine coffee shop and restaurant – just off Longstreet in Cape Town, South Africa – was a pleasure! An all-day brasserie, pantry and event space, this is really a nice place to host a function you’re having. Breakfasts, lunches and afternoon nibbles are what you can expect to find here. I love the upstairs function areas – very chic and quirky. It shares the same owner as Tjing Tjing rooftop bar, which is located above it.

Zula Bar, Cape Town’s premier sound bar, is located at number 98 Longstreet. The night we went to shoot was absolutely packed – see for yourself in the video. The line was all the way down the road. It really reflected the vibrant night life of Cape Town, South Africa. I loved that this venue had people coming in to do all sorts – party, have a quiet drink or just have dinner. They do breakfasts, lunches and dinners every day of the week. They have various dance floors in different sections upstairs and downstairs, where people can listen to up to four different types of music on popular nights. You can order a drink and then walk around until you find your kind of music. Come in the week for stand-up comedy acts, acoustic music or bands and on the weekends to club. They’re very well-known for their pizzas if you’re coming in for dinner with friends. They’re open Mondays to Thursdays from 12pm-2am and on Fridays to Saturdays from 12pm -4am.
