Video Production Editing Cape Town South Africa Tamika Doubell

A lot of my work revolves heavily around video editing & production. In my opinion, videos are the new photos. In 5 years from now, platforms like YouTube & Netflix will be the main broadcasting streams, transcending the boundaries of our local television networks. They’re like television as we know it, but online. YouTube has already introduced the concept of users having “Channels” which are unique to them; styled & designed totally by the user. Everyone can have their own channel, for free, and can upload whatever videos they like to it. Having a channel on YouTube is like having one on TV. For South African readers, imagine all the different channels we get on DSTV. BBC Entertainment, The Discovery Channel, Universal Channel, History Channel, National Geographic Channel Supersport are some of my personal favourites. Now imagine you had your own channel, what would you broadcast? The autonomy is with you. A YouTube channel is your own channel online. The videos you upload are like the episodes which are part of a show or series. In fact, YouTube has enabled you to categorize your videos into the various playlists or ‘shows’ that you offer. This allows users to navigate your channel easily. If you don’t fancy that route, you can of course keep your channel very simple & just have tons of videos uploaded in no real order or category. That’s OK, too. YouTube gives you complete freedom to do whatever you like. Just so you get the idea, here are some really awesome channels I subscribe to on YouTube.

Vice

VICE specializes in exploring uncomfortable truths and going to places we don’t belong. Now, thanks to YouTube, we have compressed two decades of our unique immersive approach to these subjects into delicious bite-size morsels. Herein you will find people talking frankly about their hatred and love for various things, general heresy, the only travel and news documentaries you’ll want to watch, tons of exclusive new stuff, and probably a lot of cats. You’re welcome.

IamOther

Brought to you by Pharrell Williams, i am OTHER is a new channel and cultural movement dedicated to Thinkers, Innovators and Outcasts—in short, OTHERS. Our programs explore the pursuit of individuality, the defiance of expectations, and the arrival of a new class of visionaries. Be OTHER.

ENews

Giuliana Rancic, Terrence J and the rest of the E! News team provide the latest in entertainment, fashion and pop culture news. Whether it’s the hottest celeb scandal, biggest movie premiere, break-up, make-up or just that must-see moment everyone is talking about, E! News is on the case.

In the USA, “Netflix” is an enormously popular way of watching movies. For a small subscription fee a month, you have access via the internet to almost every movie / series / documentary ever made. For those of you like me, who simply love the art of video & film, you can understand how one could get addicted to this new phenomenon which is rivaling huge TV broadcasting networks like HBO. People want more these days; they want video & film. And they don’t just want them from their local surrounds (that’s great of course), but they want access to the world’s projects. They want to transcend the borders & limits of local channels & networks. They want to skip the whole “video store” middle-man. They want quick access to the hottest videos & films worldwide, and they want it now. With the rise of social media & its huge popularity which extends beyond borders & has become a universal trend over the past few years, it’s made it so much easier to watch videos & movies. With Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Reddit, Tumblr, Google+ and many other apps gaining power as advertising /marketing avenues for every business in every city worldwide, it’s hard to ignore the gradual evolution of social media & the demands from the people these days for more. Things like Instagram have recently introduced video to their app so not only can you add filters to photos & upload them, but you can add filters to videos & upload them as well. A new video sharing app called Keek is also exploding with popularity in the US. It started in Canada & is now spreading rapidly across the world, with 58 million users worldwide. Obviously we can thank stars like the Kardashians for spreading awareness of it and boosting its popularity! The benefits of these platforms are simple; to reach hundreds, thousands, even millions of people at the click of a button from your home PC or mobile phone. People don’t just want to see you. They want to know you…..hear you. And they want that instantly & on-the-go. We’re building communities, sharing opinions, exchanging experiences & connecting over shared interests. What’s more is, we’re building doing it into our 9-5 lives!

Rotary West’s Medieval Festival

IMG_0551

Skybok recently covered events for Rotary PE West as part of their “Medieval Festival”. It’s a whole weekend of festivities themed around the Middle Ages and it’s hosted at Victoria Park in Port Elizabeth. Their “Royal Banquet” is on a Friday night where everyone arrives dressed up in costumes from the Middle Ages. There’s a dinner and lots of entertainment. During the Saturday, they host an entire day filled with arts, crafts and activities that people during those times used to play! Together with my brother, I filmed and photographed these events for them. I spent about two days editing and adding music and I am so excited about the final result! It was such a festive evening and day and we managed to capture the spirit and ambiance into two easy 2 minute video profiles. See both videos below. To watch in the best quality be sure to change the viewing settings to 1080 p HD (click on the cog in the toolbar at the bottom of the video as it plays). If you are in South Africa and would like to get in touch with us to film your business or event, see our facebook page here. Happy Friday!

Happy Friday, guys! I’ve spent the week running around. I’m working on some film projects for the tourism board and at the same time i’m working on shooting a profile of my family’s business Doubell Machines. I’ve been rolling my sleeves up, putting on my army boots and walking around the factory scaring all the men with my very intimidating tripod and Canon 5D MK II! I love a good productive week. This was also the week I got my awesome Lenovo laptop which I’m so excited about! It has a core i.5 processor, 6 GB RAM, 500 GB hardrive, 15″ screen and – best of all – it has Windows 8. If you have Windows 8, here are my top 6 suggestions for great apps to download from your store (nice ideas for your android or iphone, too)

+ Flipboard

This is a really great social magazine featuring the latest stories from any field that interests you. It collects the content of social media and other websites and presents it in magazine format and allows users to “flip” through their social-networking feeds. I love it because it gives me instant access at one click to the current news in everything – from the music industry to the film industry to world news to news from my favourite companies and brands (I follow national geographic). I definitely recommend this one.

+ Aviary

This is a really great photo editor which allows you to add effects and text to your images as well as a whole bunch of other editing tools.

+ Instagram Explorer

This is basically Instagram on a computer screen. It has an easy layout which allows you to access instagram on your computer and not just via your phone. But note that you can’t actually upload via this – it’s exclusively for viewing.

+ Ballstrike

This is a fun exercise app that gets you moving (think wii fit) If you have a webcam you can use this easily; it generates targets on your screen for you to hit, so you watch yourself punch and kick the air around you for hours on end. And it also tells you how many calories you’re burning, which is great!

+ Netflix

An online video-streaming app, Netflix allows you to watch any movie, show or TV series in the world by paying a simple flat-rate fee once a month.

+ TuneIn Radio

Tune In Radio allows you to listen to terrestrial and internet streaming radio stations from around the globe. This is great for me in Cape Town, where we have a subculture of these online radio stations popping up everywhere!
