Online Streaming as a Means of Connecting Us Globally

Video Production Editing Cape Town South Africa Tamika Doubell

A lot of my work revolves heavily around video editing & production. In my opinion, videos are the new photos. In 5 years from now, platforms like YouTube & Netflix will be the main broadcasting streams, transcending the boundaries of our local television networks. They’re like television as we know it, but online. YouTube has already introduced the concept of users having “Channels” which are unique to them; styled & designed totally by the user. Everyone can have their own channel, for free, and can upload whatever videos they like to it. Having a channel on YouTube is like having one on TV. For South African readers, imagine all the different channels we get on DSTV. BBC Entertainment, The Discovery Channel, Universal Channel, History Channel, National Geographic Channel Supersport are some of my personal favourites. Now imagine you had your own channel, what would you broadcast? The autonomy is with you. A YouTube channel is your own channel online. The videos you upload are like the episodes which are part of a show or series. In fact, YouTube has enabled you to categorize your videos into the various playlists or ‘shows’ that you offer. This allows users to navigate your channel easily. If you don’t fancy that route, you can of course keep your channel very simple & just have tons of videos uploaded in no real order or category. That’s OK, too. YouTube gives you complete freedom to do whatever you like. Just so you get the idea, here are some really awesome channels I subscribe to on YouTube.

Vice

VICE specializes in exploring uncomfortable truths and going to places we don’t belong. Now, thanks to YouTube, we have compressed two decades of our unique immersive approach to these subjects into delicious bite-size morsels. Herein you will find people talking frankly about their hatred and love for various things, general heresy, the only travel and news documentaries you’ll want to watch, tons of exclusive new stuff, and probably a lot of cats. You’re welcome.

IamOther

Brought to you by Pharrell Williams, i am OTHER is a new channel and cultural movement dedicated to Thinkers, Innovators and Outcasts—in short, OTHERS. Our programs explore the pursuit of individuality, the defiance of expectations, and the arrival of a new class of visionaries. Be OTHER.

In the USA, “Netflix” is an enormously popular way of watching movies. For a small subscription fee a month, you have access via the internet to almost every movie / series / documentary ever made. For those of you like me, who simply love the art of video & film, you can understand how one could get addicted to this new phenomenon which is rivaling huge TV broadcasting networks like HBO. People want more these days; they want video & film. And they don’t just want them from their local surrounds (that’s great of course), but they want access to the world’s projects. They want to transcend the borders & limits of local channels & networks. They want to skip the whole “video store” middle-man. They want quick access to the hottest videos & films worldwide, and they want it now. With the rise of social media & its huge popularity which extends beyond borders & has become a universal trend over the past few years, it’s made it so much easier to watch videos & movies. With Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Reddit, Tumblr, Google+ and many other apps gaining power as advertising /marketing avenues for every business in every city worldwide, it’s hard to ignore the gradual evolution of social media & the demands from the people these days for more. Things like Instagram have recently introduced video to their app so not only can you add filters to photos & upload them, but you can add filters to videos & upload them as well. A new video sharing app called Keek is also exploding with popularity in the US. It started in Canada & is now spreading rapidly across the world, with 58 million users worldwide. Obviously we can thank stars like the Kardashians for spreading awareness of it and boosting its popularity! The benefits of these platforms are simple; to reach hundreds, thousands, even millions of people at the click of a button from your home PC or mobile phone. People don’t just want to see you. They want to know you…..hear you. And they want that instantly & on-the-go. We’re building communities, sharing opinions, exchanging experiences & connecting over shared interests. What’s more is, we’re building doing it into our 9-5 lives!
