Got a kid who lives in their books? Throw them a party that feels like stepping inside their favorite story.

As someone who runs a travel blog, I’m always chasing experiences that feel like stepping into another world.

For middle graders (8–12), a bookworm birthday party is just that—a chance to live out an adventure like the ones they read about!

It’s like giving them their own “passport” into a world of imagination!

Here’s how to design a party that feels like stepping into a storybook—no plane ticket required!

Ps. If you need a gift – check out my new children’s book, the perfect fantasy adventure for kids who can’t resist a magic school and a quirky female heroine!

📚 Set the Scene

Start with a snack table that looks straight out of a library. Stack old hardcover books in piles of different heights and use them as cupcake stands!

Other snack table ideas:

Cherry Tomatoes on plastic ants

Book worm sour worms in packets with printed labels

Fairytale sidekicks with apples + strawberries!

🖋️ Dress the Part

Invite guests to dress as their favorite book characters or in “library chic” (think scarves, glasses, and mysterious notebooks).

🍵 Eat Like a Character

Serve “Potion Punch” (add dry ice for a smoky effect) and snack platters named after famous books.

Harry Potter Polyjuice Potion

🎉 Add a Plot Twist

  • Blind Date with a Book: Wrap up books for guests to pick and take home.
  • Bookmark Station: Set up a craft table to design bookmarks.
  • Read-Aloud Circle: Share a spooky or funny story by flashlight.

🎁 Send Them Home Smiling

Mini journals, secondhand books tied with twine, pocket pal lucky stones, “reading kits” (tea + chocolate) or other party favors like tic tac toe bags make perfect favors!

Party favor – tic tac toe

Party favor – nought & crosses
