Aunt Ruby’s B&B, Lake Charles
I was recently in Lake Charles, a Cajun-influenced town near the Texas–Louisiana border, where I stayed at what might be the oldest B&B I’ve ever booked. Aunt Ruby’s sits in the Charpentier Historic District, a neighborhood full of tall wooden houses and creaky porches. We arrived late, when the streets were dark and the trees were rustling in that slow Louisiana way. The house itself dates back to 1911 and once served as the city’s first boarding house, welcoming travelers long before modern hotels appeared.

Aunt Ruby’s was once a boarding house in 1911
The Charpentier District, where Aunt Ruby’s sits, is known for its old Victorian homes built in the late 1800s

Aunt Ruby’s is ranked #1 of B&Bs / Inns in Lake Charles
Breakfast is included in the price — expect to pay around $85-$165 per night

The marshes around Lake Charles are full of Cajun folklore about rougarou (werewolf-like creatures), ghost lights in the swamp or sky, and spirits said to wander the bayous. I woke at 2 a.m. to a cat fight outside, and when I stepped out to look, I noticed strange lights in the clouds (video below).
If you love history like me and need a place to stay in the area, book Aunt Ruby’s here!
