A while back, I travelled to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and stayed at the beautiful old Victoria Falls Hotel.

While I was there, I decided to try something a little more adventurous: crocodile stir-fry.

I tried the strange crocodile stir-fry at the evening buffet…

Crocodile meat is eaten in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in southern Africa, and naturally, I had to know what it tasted like.

The verdict?

Surprisingly mild. The meat was firm and lean, somewhere in that strange territory between chicken and fish. But eating it sent me down a much stranger rabbit hole.

Just as I ate the crocodile stir-fry, a strange masked ritual began metres from our table. I captured it on camera, but only later discovered what the masks were believed to summon.
