Nyosi Wildlife Reserve ($95-$130)

Growing up connected to the Eastern Cape, I never realized how ahead of its time it actually was. Now the rest of the world seems to be searching for exactly what this region has always offered naturally: eco-lodges, off-grid cabins, forests, wildlife, and silence.

Places like Nyosi Wildlife Reserve, where cabins range from around R1,750 to R2,400 per cabin per night (roughly $95–$130 USD), and The Fernery Lodge & Chalets, with rates starting around R3,400 per room per night (around $185 USD), are part of a growing wave of stays focused less on flashy luxury and more on atmosphere, nature, and escape.

Swell Eco Lodge has also become popular for its barefoot eco-retreat atmosphere and peaceful river-mouth setting, with stays ranging from roughly R1,380 to R2,185 per cabin per night (around $75–$120 USD). Meanwhile, The Shire Eco Lodge offers forest cabins that feel straight out of a fantasy novel, with rates generally ranging from R1,500 to R3,000 per cabin per night (roughly $80–$165 USD) depending on the season.

And honestly, that might explain why the Eastern Cape suddenly feels so appealing right now. The world feels loud. The Eastern Cape doesn’t.
