A wooden settle bench with a high back and curved seat, featuring decorative drawer pulls, positioned against a wall in a room with hardwood flooring and light coming through a window.

I nearly walked right past this old bench in the Matjiesfontein tavern! Then I noticed the giant wooden back towering above it. Turns out it isn’t just a bench at all. It’s called a hall settle, and people used to sit on them to keep warm before central heating. The high back blocked icy drafts, while the drawers underneath held everything from hats and gloves to candles and sewing supplies.
