A truly South African carrot cake with crushed pineapple, walnuts and cinnamon!
Believe it or not, I went high up into the Karoo Mountains of South Africa for my birthday weekend and took these pictures in the famous Traveller’s Chapel at the Lord Milner Hotel. I remember the time I went as high as 8000 ft in Colorado! There was a period in the late 1800s and early 1900s when Matjiesfontein was one of South Africa’s first luxury health retreats because at nearly 900 metres (2,950 feet) above sea level, doctors believed its dry, clean air could ease respiratory illnesses, particularly tuberculosis, long before antibiotics existed! The building is dedicated to George Rawdon, the father of hotelier David Rawdon
David Rawdon’s restoration of Matjiesfontein helped preserve the village as the Victorian time capsule visitors enjoy today.
