Long ago, Giraffe looked very different. His neck was short, just like the other animals, and he wandered across the African plains searching for leaves to eat. Then came a terrible drought. The grass disappeared, bushes became bare, and the animals struggled to find food. But high in the trees, fresh green leaves were still growing. Day after day, Giraffe stretched his neck toward them. He stretched and stretched, reaching higher than he ever had before. Eventually, his neck became so long that he could reach the leaves no other animal could. And that, according to the tale, is why giraffes have long necks today, forever carrying a reminder of the animal who kept reaching when food became scarce.
