Austin + Cape Town = Live Music Love

Now that I’m in Austin, I notice how similar the two cities are when it comes to their love for live music. In Cape Town, Skybok filmed many bars that were essentially stages for local artists to get a kick start into a competitive industry. (See my post on it here). It’s no different here in Austin, and that’s what makes both cities so creative + so appealing. After all, Cape Town + Austin are both among their country’s fastest growing cities respectively.

FYI: Austin is ranked by Forbes as America’s fastest growing city  + Cape Town is South Africa’s 3rd fastest.

South African Interviews

Inspired By: Mi Casa

For my readers who don’t know, Mi Casa is a South African band. They’re most well-known for their hit song “Jika”. They were recently down in Cape Town for a performance at the Cape Town Convention Centre. One of my business partners was managing them on the evening + he took me backstage to meet them, right before they performed for the president! Pretty cool, huh? It makes me proudly South African to see such brilliant talent + especially to see how they’re conquering the global music scene. Kinda like another South African duo – you may know them – Die Antwoord. See my photos with them here. Mi Casa is my “Inspired By” spotlight this month – see last month’s inspiration, Victor Matom.

South African In: London

I’ll never forget when I went to London in 2012 to compete in Top Model UK. What an exciting time in one of the best cities of the world! I was there for a few weeks for the show and stayed in the Hilton Hotel, London Metropole. During my free time, I made sure I dressed warm because it was the middle of winter and it was so chilly outside!

I’ve been pretty busy lately.  I’ve had a lot of photoshoots modelling wise and have been learning a lot. I’m working on my acting showreel and will be starting work on a project as part of Skybok filming and editing for Yokhuselo Haven for Abused Women who is hosting a big function in honour of their 25th anniversary this month. I’m presenting in a new Industrial series for my family’s company Doubell Machines and I’m soon making the move to Johannesburg but will be making a trip to Cape Town Nov 1 for the summer season there. The word on my lips is COMMUTE ! I’ll be doing a lot of that in the time to come. Good thing I just bought a new cabin bag 😉 Acting-wise, there’s usually a great deal of castings and auditions up in Cape Town during these next 2 months of the year, so I’m excited for that. In the midst of all this, I’ve discovered a coffee shop in Port Elizabeth called La Boca. When I went the other day I had a pot of Rooibos tea (a true South African product) and an amazing cheese platter. Thank Goodness I had my laptop with me, as The Mail & Guardian contacted me for some photos of Grahamstown’s nightlife which I happened to have a lot of seeing as Skybok Profiles filmed many of their clubs last year! Watch one of our profiles of their biggest nightclub below. I did the editing and voice work and my brother did the filming. Shot on a CANON 5D MK 2 with a 50mm fixed focus lens and a 20mm wide angle lens.

Another amazing nightclub I discovered this weekend was the “Highline Ballroom” in New York City at 431 W 16th Street. I went for “The Good Life Saturdays” and what a party it was! I absolutely loved it. I can highly recommend this for a great night out – the music was amazing.

See New York: 230 on 5th

I celebrated my birthday in New York! My favorite moment was at a rooftop bar for my called “230 on 5th avenue”. It was the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to. I would recommend that if you have anything you want to celebrate in New York, this is the place to go! Check out their website. I also really enjoyed the “Hudson Hotel” … I suggest starting at the “Tequila Park” then working your way over to the “Sky Terrace” and finally ending up in the “Hudson Common” like we did 🙂 Here is their website and the address is 356 West 58th Street. (Needless to say the evening began with a bottle of proudly South African Graham Beck Brut…..you can take the girl out of South Africa, but you can’t take South Africa out of the girl…..!)

Filming Zula Bar in Cape Town for Skybok

For best viewing quality, make sure to set the viewing settings to 1080p HD by clicking on the cog at the bottom right-hand corner of the video as it plays.

Zula Bar, Cape Town’s premier sound bar, is located at number 98 Longstreet. The night we went to shoot was absolutely packed – see for yourself in the video. The line was all the way down the road. It really reflected the vibrant night life of Cape Town, South Africa. I loved that this venue had people coming in to do all sorts – party, have a quiet drink or just have dinner. They do breakfasts, lunches and dinners every day of the week. They have various dance floors in different sections upstairs and downstairs, where people can listen to up to four different types of music on popular nights. You can order a drink and then walk around until you find your kind of music. Come in the week for stand-up comedy acts, acoustic music or bands and on the weekends to club. They’re very well-known for their pizzas if you’re coming in for dinner with friends. They’re open Mondays to Thursdays from 12pm-2am and on Fridays to Saturdays from 12pm -4am.

So the big event right now on everyone’s lips is the up-coming FCM Fashion Party. In case you didn’t know, ‘FCM’ stands for “Ferial’s Closet Makeover” – a Couture designer label, hot on the South African scene. All clothes are designed by the talented and sassy Ferial Dawood.
