A picture perfect harbor on our way into Newport

Highlight on Newport, Rhode Island

We spent a few days in the charming, affluent seaside town of Newport in Rhode Island. It’s where many millionaires had their summer homes during the gilded age, including the Vanderbilts! We were in New York for Christmas and decided to drive through Connecticut to get there! I’ve always wanted to see it.
The weather was freezing! But we thoroughly enjoyed every minute. We surrendered to the cold and piled on coats and scarves! Of course we we did the mandatory mansion tour of gilded mansions down Bellevue Avenue, as well as some lighthouse and harbor walks, a ghost walk (of course) and antique shopping… but most especially, I LOVED being in our “Turret Suite” at Castle Hill Inn, a 4-star Forbes Rated Property… Photos below!
Plan your vacation there, now! Nothing like relaxing seaside air and salty walked along the cliff. It remind me of my home town in South Africa.
A visit to The Classic Coast—nine vibrant and historic towns all sharing some seriously prime New England coastline—is both everything you expect and enjoyably unpredictable.

On May 25, 2015, the town was hit by catastrophic flooding during the 2015 Texas–Oklahoma floods, along the Blanco River which flows through town.

I found a magnificent student town recently called Wimberley outside of San Antonio – what a fantastic place! It reminds me of Grahamstown in South Africa. (more…)

I spent some time in Los Angeles visiting family over the weekend. We took a stroll along Manhattan Beach Pier + watched the sunset. It was pretty awesome. I love downtime outdoors, especially when it’s a good day + there’s a great view. The week gets so busy, it’s important to remember to relax + unwind.

LBJ Presidential Library

About

I toured the LBJ Presidential Library when I was in Austin recently. Lyndon B. Johnson was the 36th president of the United States. He was born in Texas on August 27, 1908. He was elected vice president in 1960 + became the 36th president in 1963 after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. This library is a sort of museum about him, housing letters that passed between him + other global leaders as well as various replications + educational displays. There were many tour groups. I found it very interesting! I’m standing here (above) in a replica of the Oval Office –  the official office of the President of the United States. The real one is located in the West Wing of the White House  in Washington. This is what it would have looked like when LBJ worked there. I loved getting to know more about him + his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, and their place in American history.
