A picture perfect harbor on our way into Newport

Highlight on Newport, Rhode Island

We spent a few days in the charming, affluent seaside town of Newport in Rhode Island. It’s where many millionaires had their summer homes during the gilded age, including the Vanderbilts! We were in New York for Christmas and decided to drive through Connecticut to get there! I’ve always wanted to see it. The weather was freezing! But we thoroughly enjoyed every minute. We surrendered to the cold and piled on coats and scarves! Of course we we did the mandatory mansion tour of gilded mansions down Bellevue Avenue, as well as some lighthouse and harbor walks, a ghost walk (of course) and antique shopping… but most especially, I LOVED being in our “Turret Suite” at Castle Hill Inn, a 4-star Forbes Rated Property… Photos below! Plan your vacation there, now! Nothing like relaxing seaside air and salty walked along the cliff. It remind me of my home town in South Africa.
A visit to The Classic Coast—nine vibrant and historic towns all sharing some seriously prime New England coastline—is both everything you expect and enjoyably unpredictable.

Edgar Allen Poe’s Front Door, where the ghost walk begins

I did a ghost walk when I was recently in New York. If you have been following my blog, you’ll know that I’ve started a ghost series to recount my best walks and give suggestions (and photos or videos where I can). My first ghosty post was from York. Read it here.

Below are some photos with captions of the most haunted spots in NYC! Feel free to ask questions or give feedback about an awesome ghost walk you have done! (please try leave the name of the company and the city you did it in!) (more…)

A quaint doorway in Old Town Alexandria

As George Washington’s adopted hometown, Alexandria is a “best of” when it comes to the spectrum of sites and events associated with the nation’s first president.

And only eight miles south of Old Town Alexandria, lies the most visited historic estate in America: George Washington’s Mount Vernon. This is the general’s former home which continues bustling centuries later!

Following on from my post about ferrying to Alexandria earlier this week, I wish to dedicated this post to “Mount Vernon” – home to George Washington – as well as the neighbourhood that houses it, Alexandria, where Washington called home.

On May 25, 2015, the town was hit by catastrophic flooding during the 2015 Texas–Oklahoma floods, along the Blanco River which flows through town.

I found a magnificent student town recently called Wimberley outside of San Antonio – what a fantastic place! It reminds me of Grahamstown in South Africa. (more…)

Stage of Country Music Awards 2016 (Dolly Parton received her Lifetime Achievement Award)

I can still hear it now… the strumming of guitar strings + the smokey voice of Chris Stapleton singing “Whiskey and You” at 2016’s Country Music Awards in Nashville. He was a nominee in various categories + received the award for “Male Vocalist of the Year”. The Bridgestone Arena was an incredible space to host the event, which was speckled with stars being cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of country music fans. I’m so thrilled I was able to go! Country Music is definitely a signature Texan sound – very different from the sounds I’m used to in South Africa! (more…)

3 Things I love this June

  1. This blog called “I am not a stalker” by a woman who writes about famous film locations such as Marilyn Monroe spots
  2. This instagram feed by a gemstone lover and self-proclaimed “crystal temptress”
  3. The documentary on Netflix called “Diana: In Her Own Words” (watch it, now.)
